EUNAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EUNAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.</p>

<p><strong>The Chemical Tanker MV HANNIBAL II, was released from pirate control on 17 March 2011.  The Panamanian flagged vessel </strong><a href="http://www.eunavfor.eu/2010/11/mv-hannibal-ii-pirated-in-the-somali-basin/"><strong>was hijacked on 11 November 2010</strong></a><strong>, approximately 860 nautical miles East of the Horn of Africa.</strong></p>

<p>  The vessel and her crew of 30 are believed to be making for a safe port. The crew members are from Tunisia, Philippines, Croatia, Georgia, Russia and Morocco.</p>
<p> The vessel had 31 crew members on board when she was taken but, as <a href="http://www.eunavfor.eu/2010/12/sick-crewmember-is-lifted-from-pirated-vessel-in-joint-naval-operation/" target="_blank">previously reported</a> by the EU on the 17 December, EU NAVFOR joined the Combined Maritime Force (CMF) to evacuate a crew member after reports were received that he had a possible appendicitis. </p>
<p>According to the owner all the crew members are safe and in good health.</p>

<p><strong>In the morning of 14 March, the EU NAVFOR French frigate FS NIVÔSE provided assistance to the MV JAHAN MONI after she was released from pirate control.  </strong></p>
<p>The French warship provided fresh water, food and medical assistance to the crew after a request from the vessel’s owner was received.   </p>
<p>The merchant vessel and the 26 Bangladeshi crew members had been pirated on 5 December 2010, in the Somali Basin, approximately 1300 nautical miles East of Eyl (Somalia).</p>
<p>The crew were examined by Spanish medical staff and the MV JAHAN MONI is now heading for a safe port.</p>

<p><strong>The MV YORK, together with 25 crewmembers from the MV RAK AFRIKANA, has arrived safely in Mombasa after being released from pirate control on 9 March.  </strong></div>
<p>The crew of the MV RAK AFRIKANA, which was herself <a href="http://www.eunavfor.eu/2011/03/eu-navfor-and-italian-navy-rescue-crew-of-pirated-vessel-in-solas-case/" target="_blank">released by pirates</a> on 8 March, were transferred to the MV YORK after being rescued by the Italian warship ITS ZEFFIRO when the master sent out a distress call.</p>
<p>The MV YORK, and her crew of 17 (from Germany, Ukraine and the Philippines), was <a href="http://www.eunavfor.eu/2010/10/merchant-vessel-york-pirated-in-the-somali-basin/" target="_blank">pirated on 24 October 2010</a> approximately 50 nautical miles East of Mombasa, Kenya.  There is no information on the condition of the crews from either vessel.</p>

<p><strong>In the early morning of 9 February, EU NAVFOR received reports that the South Korean Fishing Vessel Golden Wave had been released from pirate control.</strong></p>

<p>Although the condition of the 43 crewmembers (39 Kenyan, 2 South Koreans and 2 Chinese nationals) is not known at this time, EU NAVFOR understands that they are in need of food, water and medical aid.  At the request of the South Korean Government, an EU NAVFOR warship is currently heading toward the vessel to render immediate SOLAS assistance.</p>
<p>The Golden Wave, which is also known as the Keummi 305, was pirated off the Kenyan coast on 9 October 2010.</p>
<p>EUNAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EU NAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. In addition, EUNAVFOR monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.</p>

<p><strong>In the early morning of 16 January, the Product Tanker MV MOTIVATOR was released from pirate control.</strong></p>
<p>The Marshall Islands flagged vessel, which was pirated on in the Southern Red Sea on 4 July and has a crew of 18 Filipino nationals, was released approximately 160 nautical miles South- West of the island of Socotra near to the coast of Somalia.  An EUNAVFOR ship assisted the crew immediately after their release.</p>
<p>According to the ship’s Greek owners, the crew are reported to be as well as could be expected given the circumstances.</p>

<p>The vessel, which has a deadweight of 5,136 tonnes and a crew of 14, was heading to Jeddah when she was pirated in the Gulf of Aden on 3 March 2010.</p>
<p>The master of the ship is Greek and the rest of the crewmembers are from Sri Lanka.</p>
